Digital Art
What Is Digital Art?
Digital art isn’t all that new
In 1965, a mathematician, Frieder Nake, created a computer algorithm that allowed
a machine to draw certain objects. Since them, the use of digital technology used in
the creative process has continued to evolve. Today, many places put digital art in
the category of new media art. As with most changes, digital art didn’t have a warm
welcome when it first made its way into the art community. In some circles it’s still
very controversial. One thing is for certain, digital art isn’t going anywhere. In fact,
if anything, it will continue to evolve, along with a modern world that becomes more
technologically dependent.
What is the difference between traditonal art and digital art?
Traditional art is art that is created by an artist’s hand such as in painting, drawing
or sculpting. Traditional artists use man made tools such as paint, pencils, clay or
metals. Artists like Van Gogh, Vermeer, Seuart and DaVinci built the foundation to
what traditional art is today. Digital art is created by using some form of art created
using digital technology. There are many categories that fall under Digital Art,
including but not limited to, photography, photo-painting, digital painting and
more. Many consider both two separate entities but in truth, Digital art is simply an
extension of traditional art. Digital art uses the same process for creation, but the
difference is, you do not have all the supplies and expense like you do if you were
painting or sculpting. It is not to say that traditional art is equal to digital art, it is
simply saying both are forms of a creative process brought together by the hand of
an artist.
Is digital art real art?
There are people out there who believe that Digital art isn’t truly art, it’s clicking
away on a keyboard to produce a generated image. It is not true. Digital art is
not easy. Much like traditional art, you need to know and be familiar with your
tools. It can take years for an artist to gain experience in either application. Art
isn’t an object but a form of a person’s self-expression. For instance, a toilet
sitting out in someone’s front year decorated with flowers may not appear trash
to one person but art to another.
